 +With a fascination for human cognition and diverse interests in scientific disciplines ranging from psychology to maths and computer science, I joined the interdisciplinary programme Cognitive Science at the Osnabrueck University for my undergraduate studies. The unique millieu allowed me to explore many distinct but interacting disciplines of cognition and to discover my passions for the brain – the most intriguing puzzle of biology. While I really loved studying higher brain functions like visual perception and decision-making, and mavelled endlessly at neuropsychological phenomena such as hemispatial neglect, I always felt an urge to understand the brain from a more fundamental perspective. What are the physiological mechanisms underlying those cognitive (mal-)functions? How can the mechanisms be explained on the level of single neurons – the smallest computational units – and on the circuit level? Guided by my wish to acquire a useful theoretical and computational skill-set to study these questions, I joined the master’s programme Computational Neuroscience at the BCCN Berlin. Here, I quickly became fascinated by the verious theoretical approaches to study the brain with my favorite topics being the dynamical systems theory and biophysical models of single neurons. Currently, I am working in the computational neurophysiology group on the effect of learning on the network dynamics that are simultaneously influenced by single neuron properties.
